Four teenagers from Taura local government area, in Jigawa state yesterday drowned while swimming in a pond along Garki road, 2 kilometres away from Taura town.
The victims Abubakar Dahiru (13yrs), Adamu Abdulmumini (11yrs), Sabi’u Yusif (11yrs) and Ibrahim Kabiru (12yrs) were discovered floating atop the water that had gathered after the recent days’ rains.
Residents of Taura community were thrown into grief when the lifeless bodies of their children were brought to the town by the rescue team of the NSCDC.
Investigations by our reporter revealed that the children of the community have been used to visiting the pond for their baths in the murky water, which has been a burrow pit used by an undisclosed road construction firm.
The residents of the town told our reporter that the incidence was not the first, as they said the pond has claimed the lives of some children in the past; however, they stressed that it has never claimed up to four at a go. They said some of the kids mostly teenagers and as little as toddlers go there to swim while others fish.
The commandant of the state chapter of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Muhammad Gidado Fari, who spoke to Peoples Daily, said that the four kids were killed as a result of drowning in the pool while two others were rescued by his men.
The commandant said the Civil Defence’s Rapid Rescue Team that arrived the scene were able rescue Hassan Mohammed (12yrs) and Yusif A. Yusif (7yrs).
The state commandant of the corps, Dr. Muhammad Gidado called on parents to be pro-active in monitoring the movement of their children in order to avoid such calamities in future.
