Thirty one political parties at the weekend came together to give birth to a new political alliance called Committee of Concerned Political Parties (CCPP), with the objective of striking a commonly beneficial political deal ahead of 2019 general election.
The parties also intent to adopt a common position regarding key and boiling national issues such as insecurity, politics and economy, with the singular objective of ensuring that there is a reasonable peace for the conduct of the 2019 general election.
Speaking in Abuja, the newly elected Chairman of the three-man Steering Executive who also doubles as the National Chairman of Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), Onwubuya Breakforth, said the CCPP will jointly discuss and recommend solutions to key national issues threatening the peace and unity of the country.
“We have entered the most delicate and sensitive period of our season as politicians, having only few months to the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
“You will agree with me that the major objective of every political leader is to lead his party to either win election and democratically take power, alone or join forces with others to achieve the same objective.
“It is on this premise that some of us consider it imperative for some political party leaders who share the vision of a peaceful and united Nigeria, vision of a better tomorrow for our dear country Nigeria, a vision of free, fair and credible elections and vision for the enthronement of credible leadership during the elections to come together and resolve to convene this meeting with the view to facilitating our coming together as cooperating group of political parties with the intention of taking joint decisions on key national issues, as well as joining forces together to produce the next government.
“We have not concluded on what the nature of this working relationship should be, we envisaged a strong relationship that will make us key players in the realization of a well restructured and united Nigeria, peaceful 2019 general elections and emergence of credible winners in the election, preferably within our fold,” he said.
Onwubuya further said that the various options open to the group in relations to the 2019 general elections would be explored in the best interest of the country.
Other members of the three-man Steering Executive include: the National Secretary of Sustainable National Party, (SNP), who will serve as Secretary and the National Secretary of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who will serve as the Publicity Secretary.
The CCPP also formed additional Sub-committees to articulate and aggregate the overall objectives of the group and arrange for the unveiling of coalition in the coming weeks.
The members of the Sub-committees are: Committee on Restructuring Nigeria and Electoral Matters to be chaired by the Deputy National Chairman, Social Democratic Party (SDP), Abdul Ahmed, Committee on National Security and Integration, to be chaired by the National Chairman of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Alhaji Gani Galadima.
Others include Committee on Planning and Finance, Committee on Contact and Mobilization to be chaired by Comrade Abdulmalik Abdulmaham of National People’s Congress (NPC), Committee on Research and Documentation to be chaired by Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Sokoto of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).
While noting national cohesion and unity as the only key to any meaningful changes and development in the country, Onwubuya had disclosed that the various sub-committees are to swing into action and submit their reports, as well as their recommendations on boiling national issues before the unveiling of the group.
