Ahead of the planned visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Benue State to empathize with the people over the new year killings of more than 73 persons, suspected Fulani herdsmen yesterday struck in Omusu Edumoga, Okpokwu local government area killing more than 30 people.
The incident according to one of the locals Peter Ojabo who spoke to newsmen in the area, occurred around 4:30 PM.
Ojabo said the marauders stormed the area in a commando manner, killed his father aged over 70, regretting that he could not rescue him because of ill-health.
“They murdered my father Innocent Ojabo in his house. I heard gunshot coming from LGEA primary school. I could not save him because I just had an operation and still weak. The herdsmen came from river Ogege and carried out the mayhem”, Ojabo cried.
Another local Paul Abah, a farmer said he hid inside his room and watched how over 26 people were killed and 5 persons injured.
“They came from Ado local government area which shares border with us. I saw them because I could not run due to my fractured leg as they unleashed terror on them people”, Abah lamented.
Meanwhile, the village have been completely deserted with the people taking refuge in nearby Ojapo village while the dead bodies have been deposited at General Hospital Okpoga and the injured, most of whom are children within the ages of 5 and 7, are receiving treatment at St. Mary’s Hospital, Ogwu also in Okpoga.
Addressing the displaced persons in Ojapo, Governor Samuel Ortom described the incident as ‘unfortunate ‘, regretting that in spite of spirited efforts made to curb the killings, it has continued unabated.
He said government cannot fold its hands and watch it citizens been brutally murdered, reiterating calls for the arrest of leaders of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.
“All we seek is justice and nothing more. We have some of their weapons to track them. We cannot surrender our land to criminals who come to our community to kill more than 24 people. One day, they will attack us, the leaders. Even when effort was made by the local government chairman Ogwuche Olofu to address the issue, they still went ahead to kill innocent people especially children. Since two wrongs cannot make a right, I urge you not to take laws into your hands”, Ortom appealed.
