This year’s Happy China New Year Temple Fair celebration will have a special donation session which will be used to help people in great need, Cultural Counselor, Embassy of People’s Republic in China in Nigeria and Director, China Cultural Centre, Mr. Li Xuda has said.
Mr. Li who made this known Monday during a press conference on the 2020 Chinese New Year Temple Fair in Abuja said that Chinese New Year has a history dated back as ancient to 2000bc.
He said the festival celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese Lunar calendar. “Just as the Christmas to Christian world and Eid al-Fitr to the Islamic world, the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year, is the most celebrated Traditional Festival in China and many Asian Countries, and among the Chinese communities worldwide”.
Li who said that the festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in China informed that this year‘s temple fair is a special donation session in which the Chamber of Commerce utilizes the temple fair as an important platform of influence and attention.
He said they will call for a donation among Chinese companies for IDP camps themed in “Cares in the festive season” and there are plans to donate rice, noodles, oil to the helpless people in IDP camps; with selfless assistance and devotion to let those in times of harshness to have a happy new year!
His words, “Among the many customs, rituals, and practices associated with this Festival, the temple fair, a traditional cultural gathering of the folks, is standing out.
“The temple fair is traditionally held at the temples or adjacent to them, so it is named temple fair. Originally formed by vendors or hawkers who sold their goods to people who journeyed to the temples during traditional festivals, now temple fair has gradually become a kind of cultural gathering where people have fun.
“The Happy Chinese New Year Temple Fair is celebrated in many countries in the world, in 2019 more than 1500 events was held in over 133 countries. It has also been held in Nigeria for three years in a row at the Chinese Cultural Center since 2017 in which Nigerians and local Chinese community shared the joy of the Prosperous passing year and wishing for a fruitful new year. And this year, the fourth edition of the Abuja Temple Fair was planned on 25th January from 10am to 2pm, at the Cultural Center.
“Organized by the Center in collaboration with the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, this event has received endorsement of the Chinese Embassy and support of over 20 local Chinese companies and restaurants. Guests can expect grand theatrical performances, movie screenings, Chinese cuisine tastings and many other activities, experience a day like in China” Li said.
Also speaking, Deputy Director of the Centre, Ms. Jia Xiaoling who thanked everybody for honouring the event said it will promote China, Nigeria friendship which is increasing by the day.
