To forestall the use of drugs in inducing youths into crime during the forthcoming elections, Yobe state Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has engaged in a clean-up exercise to ensure a drug free environment for the up-coming election.
Briefing our reporter in his office in Damaturu, the Yobe state Commander of NDLEA, Reuben Appeh, said his men have already commenced hunting operations to known hide-outs of the users and abusers of drugs both in Damaturu, the state capital and locations in local government areas of the state.
“In order to ensure positive peace during the coming elections in the state, we have commenced a clean-up exercise in know locations such as the Sunday market and the mass transit motor packs in Damaturu the state capital as well as the Nguru local government main market, Fulani park among other know hide-outs of this criminal minded people.
He told our reporter that recently, through intelligence report, his men arrested two suspects, Garba Mohammed commonly known as Malam Yahaya and one Umar Baba who were carrying a total number of 403 blocks of Canabis or Indian hemp weighing 360.6 kilogram.
He wondered how these culprits escaped the vigilance of security operatives all the way from Edo state until they entered Damaturu, Yobe state capital, but however said they tactfully constructed a false compartment in the vehicle where they hid the items and left the visible part of the vehicle empty on the excuse that they are still looking for goods and passengers and in that way, deceive security operatives along the way but could not deceive the vigilante and watchful eyes of his men in the state capital.
He told our reporter that during investigation, the main leader, Malam Yahaya confessed to have been in the business for three years under his master, one Austin, whose second name was not known who owns a farm where these Indian hemps are being cultivated stating that they were on their way to Maiduguri in Borno state.
In a breakdown of the activities of his office within the last 13 months in the state, he said a total of 1,084 kilogram of cannabis and psychotropic substances and been seized by his men, while a total number of 355 suspects, out of which only one was a female has been arrested, 36 out this number has been prosecuted,247 counseled and released, while others are facing trials at the federal high courts in Damaturu and Potiskum local government areas respectively.
