Few months to 2015 general elections, Human Rights Activist, Barrister Festus Okoye yesterday said the number of Nigerians who are applying for visas in foreign embassies for fear of political violence is on the increase.
He said people are afraid that there would be violence in 2015 election and so they are planning to leave the country.
Barrister Okoye disclosed this as guest speaker at the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Kaduna state Council Press Week held in the state.
“We all know that Nigerians are already running away by sending their families home. Most of them are hiding under Christmas and New Year holiday to send their families to village or abroad just to escape the anticipated violence,” he said.
He therefore charged the media and political class do the right thing that they are supposed to do, so as to make the election free and fair
He also charged the media to continue being Apolitical so as to save the country’s democracy.
On the insecurity in the country, Barrister Okoye said Media, civil society must come together to ensure that Nigerian democracy is safe.
He expressed worry over the proliferation of Small arms in the country, describing it as very alarming.
