2015: Kwara PDP group kicks against candidate imposition
From Olanrewaju Lawal, Ilorin
A political group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State under the aegis of Safe Kwara Project (SAKWAP) has vowed to resist any attempt to impose gubernatorial candidate on the party.
The group in a statement made available through electronic mail yesterday by it spokesman, Alhaji Abdulmajeed Olokooba threatened that any attempt to impose an unpopular candidate on the party for 2015 governorship election would spell doom for PDP in the state.
He said all governorship aspirants in the party should be allowed to test their popularity during the party primaries in December, 2014.
He said: “Our position is that every aspirant should be subjected to popularity test, let all of them appear before the delegates who will freely choose who they want as their party flag bearer”.
He condemned the situation whereby a god father or god mother would sit in Abuja and impose an unpopular candidate on the party.
While making reference to a newspaper publication of Sunday, November 16, 2014, (not Peoples Daily newspaper), where Hajia Muina Shagaya was quoted to have insisted on Mr Dele Belgore as the party’s choice for the ticket, the SAKWAP coordinator said the group would vehemently resist any attempt to foist Belgore on the party.
Olokooba therefore appealed to the leadership of the party in the state and Abuja to tow the path of reason and allow the party’s flag bearer to emerge through the primary.
He noted that the freedom PDP was championing in the state would be rubbished if the leadership of the party failed to allow the people elect their candidate.
Olokooba who observed that the era of imposition of candidates has gone in PDP with the defection of Dr Bukola Saraki and his cronies, added that people embraced PDP based on the belief that it is only in PDP that they can enjoy level play ground in any contest.
Olokooba said that the purpose of merit in sharing democratic dividends would be defeated if the leadership of PDP adopt the concept of imposition of candidate.
“If we are serious on reclaiming Kwara back to PDP, we should allow the delegates do their constitutional duty and elect our candidate through the ballot”, Olookooba added.
