Two people have been reportedly killed, many injured, while several people have been arrested as Police dispelled members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) Bauchi State chapter on procession in Bauchi yesterday.
There was however, no official confirmation of the number of casualties recorded from the government or security agencies.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kamal Datti Abubakar didn’t peak his calls at the time of filing this report.
IMN officials said, “We heard that several of our members were killed. We are still counting figures but before me now there are two dead bodies, and we identified 20 people arrested many of our brothers we didn’t see them yet.”
An eye witness, a journalist who spoke inder condition of anonymity, said the Anti- riot Policemen blocked the procession between Tashan Babiye, Mallam Goje along Bauchi Central Market round about.
He said, “ they fired tear gas and shoot some people the incidence that caused fear and forced people to run helter skelter for their lives, As a result of the shooting many were injured and several were arrested by the Police.”
The journalist further said, “ the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist Bauchi State chapter and many residents that lived within the vicinity of the center of Bauchi town between Tashan Babiye to Central Market smoked tear gas even women and school children smoked the tear gas. ”
He said that the police barricaded the road, although motorists are driving slowly and this has caused traffic gridlock. Some people had to take alternative routes to get to their destinations
The incident which started in the early hours of yesterday paralysed commercial activities in the area as many traders and businessmen closed their shops and caused holdup along Bauchi to Gombe road.
Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, Ibrahim Mallam Goje who was caught in the incident , said that he also suffered from the teargas that was fired by the Police around Tashan Babiye around Bakin Kura area.
Mallam Goje said , “I came out from my house and was on my way to the office this morning when I ran into the members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria who were carrying out their procession and you know they were protesting today being the 10th day of Muharram, the first new month of the Islamic Calendar. Without my knowledge that the Police were there and as I arrived there, the Police teargas the entire area and all the people there were affected including myself, we were affected by the teargas,” .
He said: “Police were well armed, well-armed with their vehicles. I cannot tell you the number of vehicles they were in, but they were many and everyone was running, so I couldn’t have known the number.”
