Suspected herdsmen insurgents yesterday attacked a Catholic Church in Ayar-Mbalom community, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two catholic priests and 13 worshippers.
The killing comes barely two days after two persons were murdered and four others sustained serious injuries in Gwer West local government area.
Chairman of the area Francis Ayaga who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday, said the attackers ambushed the people who were riding on a motorbike, averring that the herdsmen have embarked on a hide and shoot mission.
He said more than 30 soldiers have been deployed to the area to keep peace.
On the Gwer West incident, an eye witness said it occurred at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at about 5:30am while the Priests whose names were given as Rev. Fr. Gor Joseph and Rev Fr. Felix were celebrating early morning Mass.
He also, said that the attackers burnt nearly 50 houses and sacked the entire community. Bodies of the deceased priest have been deposited at the St. Theresa’s Hospital Makurdi amidst wailing and protest in Makurdi, the State capital.
The attack comes barely four days after the murder of 10 persons by herdsmen in Guma local government area and the destruction of 300 houses by men suspected to be military personnel in Naka, Gwer West local government area of the state.
In another vein, Nigerian army personnel, name withheld, posted to Logo local government area of Benue state on special duty was on Sunday evening reportedly waylaid and shot dead by suspected herdsmen along Anyiin.
