The Executive Secretary Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV /AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA) Dr Mansur Mustapha Dada has disclosed that the agency has successfully treated 17 patients suffering from leprosy in the state within the last year.
Speaking yesterday while enumerating the achievements recorded by the agency in the last one year at a press conference at the Secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi state Council , Dada explained that the lepers were found at Kuturun Kuka village in Alkaleri local government during a mini leprosy elimination campaign launched BACATMA in 2017 in settlements that had high number of disease cases.
According to him, the series of activities carried out by the agency in the control of the disease led to the drastic reduction of the number of lepers roaming about the town.
Aside from that, the executive secretary said that the federal ministry of health had in December last year awarded best Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control program to the state in recognition of BACATMA ‘s laudable initiatives.
“Our key planned activities in 2018 are house to house distribution of 4 million mosquito nets across the state, expansion of HIV PMTCT sites from 170 to 407 with delivery of quality services , mini leprosy elimination in selected settlements with high number of cases to fast track leprosy elimination in Bauchi State, “ he added.
