10,600 Nigerians studied in U. S. varsities in 2016 – Envoy

The Deputy Chief of Mission of United States Embassy in Abuja, Mr. David Young has said that more than 10,600 Nigeria students studied in over 973 institutions in all 50 states of U. S. and the District of Columbia last year.
Mr. Young who made the statement yesterday in Abuja during the U.S. Embassy Education Advising Center’s 18th annual college fair noted that Texas tops the destination of those scholars.
Speaking further, Mr. Young stated that more Nigerians study in United States than any other African country.
His words, “We’re glad you’re here, and you follow in the footsteps of thousands of Nigerians who have travelled to the United States to study. More Nigerians study in the United States than from any other African country.
“According to the most recent data we have, more than 10,600 students studied at over 973 institutions in all 50 states and the District of Columbia last year. And if you’re wondering which state is the most popular – it’s Texas!”
According Mr. Young, “Our annual college fairs have directly contributed to the increase in the number of excellent applicants to U.S. institutions, as well as increased financial aid and scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students.
“These past years, nearly $6 million (2.1 billion naira) in financial aid and scholarships were awarded to students advised by Education USA Abuja alone”.
Mr. Young also said that many Nigerian students attend diverse range of institutions in the United States, from small liberal arts private colleges to large State Universities.
“Today, we have assembled an equally diverse group. There are representatives here today from 25 U.S. Colleges and universities and we are thrilled we made the trip. Those of us who live here are well acquainted with talent, intellect, and energy of Nigeria’s students” said Mr. Young.
The American Education Advising Staff were on hand to answer questions and point admission seekers to the right direction during the event.
About 25 American universities attended this year’s fair in Abuja.
