The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo yesterday described the Late First Regular Combatant, Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari as a Professional of great worth and integrity whose attributes are uncommon these days in Nigeria.
Osinbajo said: “Brigadier Maimalari is an icon and national who deserves to be widely and more commonly acknowledged.”
Speaking during a Book Presentation of the First Regular Combatant: Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari, written by Haruna Yahaya Poloma, the Acting President said, Maimalari was killed at just 34 years of age, yet, considering the place in history he had forged for himself, he seems to be living for eternity.
Represented by the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu Kazaure, Osinbajo decried the current decline in the study of History in schools.
“As a government, we have been concerned with the decline in the creation and study of history and this has seen us recover History from the place where it has been ignored for far too long and placed it back firmly in the school curriculum.
“In our past and in our present, we can find exceptional examples of selfless service and noble deeds with which we can inspire our youth. The example of Maimalari, particularly, his growth from humble beginnings, through diligence and hard work, to the dizzy heights of public service success is worth sharing. History can thus be a useful tool in the propagation of good examples,” he said.
He congratulated the author, Haruna Yahaya Poloma, as well as the family and friends of Brigadier Maimalari for recording his sterling records of service and also for placing them squarely in the public domain through the book.
In his Speech, the Chairman of the occasion, General (Dr) Yakubu Gowan Rtd said,” Brigadier Maimalari is a model of service and of the Army in its years of innocence. Over time, several of our institutions have been poisoned mostly by the virus of corruption.
“Our people are in pain and require deliverance. But the rot is not all round. We still have models of integrity and competence whose stories young people can anchor themselves to. They can be found amongst us even now. Brigadier Maimalari is one Trumphant example and this book is a worthy memorial to his life and his ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
